Hiram Codd [1838-1887] patented his marble bottle in 1872 in England to hold mineral water. Numerous designs over the next sixty years were manufactured which did not use a cork. It was opened by a special Codd bottle opener or little finger. The British expression "Coddswallop" was derived from this bottle. Since it was most popular in England and children would break the bottles for the marbles, there are fewer Codd bottles found in US antique shops.
