Stew stoves allow the cook to stand while preparing sauces and other foods. A Roman stove display at the Museum of London is seen at the link below. Different sized copper pans were made to fit the various sized grates. The 4 hole stove at the Hermann-Grima House in New Orleans is still used weekly and classes are offered on a regular basis. New restorations at Jefferson's Monticello and Poplar Forest show how long a range of stew stoves can be. While Monticello put in a Rumford fireplace/hearth, the stew stoves do not follow Rumford designs, nor contain flues. The picture of a two hole stew stove is from Hampton Nt. Historic Site, Md. and detailed pictures can be seen at last link on this page. I have found many stew stoves and set kettles [to use the modern term], so if you have a specific question send an email to me.
