
Stew stoves allow the cook to stand while preparing sauces and other foods. A Roman stove display at the Museum of London is seen at the link below. Different sized copper pans were made to fit the various sized grates. The 4 hole stove at the Hermann-Grima House in New Orleans is still used weekly and classes are offered on a regular basis. Current exciting restorations at Jefferson's Monticello and Poplar Forest show how long a range of stew stoves can be. The designs were used by Francois Cervillies (Castrol Stove) and Count Rumford, but eventually replaced by iron enclosed stoves. The picture of a two hole stew stove is from Hampton Nt.
